Testimony

Ben Liu

I was an atheist since I was born, and was educated to believe in evolution and my own intelligence. I believed that by discovering new theories and learning advanced techniques, human beings can conquer everything and therefore are the master of the world, and the universe.

But one day, I found I was wrong, especially after reading the book of “The Son of the Wanderer”. I realized that although we can make vehicles, airplanes and even the space shuttles; although we have started to understand the basic particles such as atoms, patrons, neutrons and even quarks; although we thought we could understand genes and to clone lives, however, there is still one thing ---- we have never been able to create anything from nothing. All human beings have been doing is simply discovering the existing natural laws and applying them. There is nothing beyond this point. The more we learned from the nature, of course the more powerful we can be. However, we have never created anything.

I learned a joke from Lorne and Corinne’s English class. There was one scientist, who was so intelligent that he was even capable of making human beings from the mud. Therefore he was apparently very proud and wanted to compete with GOD. GOD simply answered him with four words: Use your own mud.

Use our own mud. If we cannot even make our own mud, how can we deny there is a great creator, and be so proud to proclaim we are the master of the universe?

Giving up atheism was the starting point of my Christian faith. Then I studied the Bible more seriously with many people such as Arnold and Bertha, Pastor Ron and Marilyn, Evangeline and Bingsu, and Gary at the university. As I learned more and more about the Bible, I found everything written in it is so true. I was deeply touched by the teachings of Jesus, as well as his personal character. I was moved by his righteousness, his forgiveness, and his love. I was amazed many times by his capability to clearly, directly and definitely express the most complicated and profound things. In all his life he did nothing for his own good. Instead, he loved us so much, suffered for our sins, died for our sins. He eventually went through and overcame death, showing us a new way for eternity. I believe he is the Son of God, and he is the Lord. As we sing, “I have decided, to follow Jesus, no turning back”.

I have worried so much about my future, my parents, my family, and everything. For so many times I struggled, and felt myself useless and helpless. Until one day, I met these verses: Matthew 6, verses 25-34, do not worry. It says: 25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?  28"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Today I am baptized at Argyle Road Baptist Church. I have given my life to Jesus. May the Holy Spirit continuously work inside me, build my character, and guide me to follow Jesus. May God the Father bless my wife, my daughter, and my parents. May God the Father bless everybody here in the church. May God the Father give us peace, and make us not worry anymore. Amen.
